What is Backflow?

Backflow is an unwanted reversal in the flow of liquids within a piping system. When this happens, contaminants flow back towards the source of fresh water, mixing with drinking water. The result—a potentially contaminated water supply. Backflow can be caused by "back pressure" or "back siphonage" in your plumbing system.

What is Cross-Connection?

Cross-connection happens when potable water (water fit for drinking) is directly or indirectly connected to non-potable plumbing piping.

The Safe Drinking Water Act:

To address backflow on a community-wide level, the Safe Drinking Water Act requires that every customer install Backflow Preventers at their own expense. A Backflow Preventer acts as a physical barrier to water flowing in the wrong direction.

Industrial sites, commercial properties and public institutions pose the greatest backflow risks and must comply immediately, followed by moderating and low risks users.
